Having seen extreme poverty first-hand during her childhood in South Africa, Lydia became aware of the connection between poverty and crime. This experience formed part of her drive to study criminal justice and pursue a career within the criminal justice system. Whilst at Leeds she has been able to undertake a collaborative dissertation, conducting interviews with local police officers as part of her research exploring how to reduce alcohol-related violence in the night-time economy in Leeds.
