Both crime and punishment have been around since the beginning of civilization. In order to ensure safety and security, governments needed to balance individual rights against the needs of citizens. This led to the creation of laws, enforcement, and corrective measures that were set in place in order to protect people. We call dynamics between these entities the criminal justice system.
The system, however, is not static. Competing priorities, like controlling crime versus protecting individual freedoms, continue to drive the debate of how to develop crime control strategies. The criminal justice system must continually evolve to meet the needs of the populations it is sworn to protect.
In this survey course, you will learn about the criminal justice system’s components: crime, law enforcement, courts, and corrections. You will also gain an understanding of the issues and challenges surrounding these entities.
