More than one million women are currently serving time behind bars, a number that has increased more than 700% since 1980. Often, these women struggle with mental illness, substance abuse and histories of physical and sexual abuse, something that women’s rights activist Donna Hylton takes personal stock in.
At the age of 19, Hylton was convicted of murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, serving 27 years at Bedford Hills Correctional in New York. Author of “A Little Piece of Light: A Memoir of Hope, Prison and a Life Unbound,” Hylton made a friend in fellow criminal justice reform advocate and women’s rights activist Audrey Johnson. Both women were serving sentences at the same age. Hylton and Johnson join “Making the Case with Yodit Tewolde” to give a talk about their experiences while incarcerated and advocate for women in the criminal justice system.
