The number of people with extreme mental disease in the criminal justice system is shockingly high. The Sequential Intercept Design and Criminal Justice offers an introduction of the current changes in correctional policy and practice that show an increased focus on community-based alternatives for offenders. Established by Drs. Mark Munetz and Patricia Griffin, the Sequential Intercept Model (SIM) determines 5 conceptual points at which standard criminal processing can be disrupted to provide community-based options: (1) law enforcement/emergency services; (2) preliminary detention/initial court hearings; (3) jails/courts; (4) re-entry; and (5) community corrections/support.
