This book is about the decision-making procedures which result in the release of major offenders back into ‘the neighborhood’. Are too numerous culprits being released, or is it a concern of insufficient guidance on release? In doing so it aims to remedy the lack of attention given-by lawyers, academics and professionals to” back door sentencing’ (where the genuine length of a sentence is chosen by those who take the decision to release) compared to ‘front door sentencing’ (decisions taken by judges or magistrates in court).
