Wrongdoer Justice Reform in the Age of COVID-19

Hollywood, Health & Society, in partnership with the WGAE and WGAW, continues its series of conversations via Zoom on a variety of topics impacted by the pandemic.

On Tuesday, July 21 at 5 p.m. (PT)/ 8 PM (ET), our webinar concentrated on how TELEVISION can support a more gentle criminal justice system.

Speakers for July 21 panel:

HANK STEINBERG– Steinberg is the creator and executive manufacturer for the ABC legal drama For Life. Previously, he was the executive producer of The Last Ship (TNT); creator, executive manufacturer and showrunner of the TV series Without a Trace (CBS); and screenwriter of the HBO movie 61 *, about the crowning achievement race in between New york city Yankee colleagues Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Steinberg has actually been chosen for an Emmy Award and a Writers Guild of America Award for screenwriting, along with a Humanitas Award. His suspense-thriller novel Out of Range was released in 2013.

The center brings insights from neuroscience, neurology and psychiatry into the legal arena in an effort to improve the justice system.

DERAY MCKESSON– Mckesson is a civil liberties activist, organizer and teacher focusing primarily on problems impacting children, families, equity and justice, with a devotion to ending cops and state violence. He is a Teach For America alum, having taught sixth-grade mathematics in New york city City. Mckesson has been recording the events of the movement through Twitter, and is the founder and co-editor of the Ferguson Protestor Newsletter. He formerly worked for the Harlem Children’s Zone, a nonprofit company dedicated to ending generational hardship in Central Harlem, and TNTP (previously The New Teacher Task), whose mission is to support and improve public schools. Mckesson has appeared on nationwide media outlets including The Daily Program, The Colbert Report, NPR, MSNBC and CNN.

BEAU WILLIMON (mediator)– Willimon is the award-winning creator/executive manufacturer of The First (Hulu) and House of Cards (Netflix). Willimon is president of the Writers Guild of America East, and an advisory board member for Hollywood, Health & Society.
